PLEA SEEKING CHANGING NAME FROM ‘INDIA’ TO ‘BHARAT’, HEARING ADJOURNED
A petition seeking directions to the centre to change name from ‘India’ to ‘Bharat’ mentioned in the very first article of our Indian Constitution, claiming it will induce sense of nationalism in our country.
A bench headed by CJI SA Bobde observed that court cannot issue any order directing centre to replace the name India from our Indian Constitution as it is already mentioned in Article 1 of our constitution. The petition filed by One Namah was scheduled to be heard on 2nd June but got adjourned as the bench slated to hear the matter was unavailable.
The Petitioner advocated that our country is addressed by various names such as India, Republic of India, Bharat, Bharat Ganarajya, etc and therefore should only be named as Bharat which will represent nation’s one voice.
