IIT Bombay may have risk for contempt against them by SC
Today, Apex Court of India had expressed unhappiness when India Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) had moved out from the smog tower project that combated for the Delhi pollution crisis.
In December 2019, the Court had given the Centre and the Delhi Government three month for setting up ‘smog tower’ pilot project at Connaught Palace (CP) in New Delhi to address the air pollution issue.
Smog tower are structures designed as large scale air purifiers to reduce the pollution particles from the atmosphere.
Today, hearing a batch related to air-pollution matters, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed three-judge bench comprising of Justices Arun Mishra, Vineet Saran and MR Shah that IIT Bombay had backed out from the said project and the government is now in talks with IIT Delhi and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).
The court was in opinion to have drawn contempt against IIT Bombay to back out after 6 months confirming for the project.
IIT Bombay will need to explain to the Court the reason to back out from the project by tomorrow.
