Delhi HC heard almost 13000 cases during this nationwide pandemic
The Delhi High Court, which has been hearing online for the last five months during the pandemic, listed 13,000 cases during this period to ensure that important cases of life and liberty and public importance are filed during the pandemic, to be heard and to be disposed of.
Between April 1 and July 31, 13,000 cases were listed in various courts through video conference . Around 2800 major cases and about 11,000 other petitions were disposed of after hearing the parties. During this period, the Registry registered 21,000 new main cases / other petitions and 196 PILs were also given out of which 155 were disposed of. Around 67,000 cases were listed in the district courts of Delhi, which were heard through video conference during this period.
From March 24 the High Court started the hearing via video conferencing and during this time took several important administrative steps like cancellation of summer vacation to compensate for the time spent during the lockdown.
Chief Justice DN Patel has constituted a committee of senior judges to gradually initiate physical action in the courts, all the benches of the High Court are hearing via video conference, steps have been taken to reduce congestion in jails and e-Lok Adalats were also organized. The High Court is also currently working on the process of physically starting the courts in a phased manner. On Friday , a statement issued by the High Court that the entire country was closed due to the global pandemic .
However, on this occasion, all the judicial establishments came forward and used innovative methods to ensure that all the necessary cases were properly heard and that the access to justice was accessible to the citizens with the help of information technology tools.
