Delhi HC directs DU to issue Digital Degrees
In a single judge bench comprising of Justice Prathiba M. Singh, Delhi HC directs Delhi University to issue digital degrees within 7 working days to students with urgent need.
The High Court, was unhappy that despite its earlier order, the varsity was not issuing digital degrees to pass out students and was demanding physical copy of proofs attached in the email requesting issuance of the document.
The High Court directed the University to issue digital degrees who urgently require the document for taking admissions in foreign universities or for employment.
Justice Prathiba said,
“Getting a degree is an event for a student but it has really become a torture”
The Judge also observed that there was lack of coordination between Delhi University and its lawyers who are not been given proper instructions by the university.
The Court also said that they are informed that till now 30,000 students have given requests on the university’s portal for digital degree certificates.
The bench has further directed Dr Sanjeev Singh, the Director of Delhi University Computer Centre (DDUC), to consider creating an ‘urgency’ tab on the portal itself, so that students who have an urgency can submit additional documents on the portal rather than sending a separate email to establish urgency.
The Bench also directed DU officials to file an affidavit capturing the details and a proper timeline shall be given as to when the digital degree certificates shall be issued to urgent and non-urgent requests.
The Court noted that earlier it was informed by the Dean (examinations), Professor Vinay Gupta and Joint Director of Delhi University Computer Centre( DDUC), Dr. Sanjeev Singh, that all the data of students up till November 2019 was available with the varsity, but on Monday it was informed that data of students only till 2017 was available.
To which the High said,
“This is a completely messed up situation. There is no data of 2018 and 2019”
