SC rejects Vijay Mallya’s plea against contempt order
The Supreme Court today rejected business man Vijay Mallya’s plea seeking review of the 2017 verdict holding him guilty for contempt of Court. He was held guilty for transferring $40 million to his children against Court orders.
Mallya filed a review petition to consider an affidavit claiming that the amount he had transferred was not part of his assets, he further claimed that he will lose his valuable right of appeal if held guilty by the Supreme Court.
The matter was going to be held on 6th August 2020, but was adjourned to 27th August 2020, since crucial records pertaining to case could not be located.
The Court said
“ We find no merits in review petitions and the review petition is dismissed”
The Bench of Justices UU Lalit and Ashok Bhushan had reserved its verdict in the review petition on 27th August
Mallya is an accused in a bank loan default case over 9,000 crores involving the Kingfisher Airline and is presently in the UK ( Vijay Mallya V. the State Bank of India and Ors).
The Supreme Court had issued its 9th May 2017 order on a plea by consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India claiming that he had allegedly transferred $40 million received from the British Firm Diageo to his children in “flagrant violation” of various judicial orders.
The banks also accused Mallya for concealing the facts and diverting the money to his son Siddharth Mallya and daughters Leenna Mallya and Tanya Mallya, which was in violation of the orders passed by the Karnataka High Court.
Earlier the Supreme Court had asked Vijay Mallya about the truthfulness of his disclosure of assets and the transfer of money to his children.
