Bharati Vidyapeeth University’s New Law College, established in 1978, is the premier institute of international excellence in the field of legal education. It is one of the constituent units of Bharati Vidyapeeth University Pune, recognized by Bar Council of India & University Grant Commission.The College affiliation is approved by Bar Council of India through Letter No. BCI-D-1029,(2009(1-E.Mtg) Dated 7/7/2009.The college is also recognized under 2f & 12b of UGC Act 1956. The college is Re-Accreditated with “A+” Grade by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (3rd Cycle). .The college was inaugurated in the year 1978 at the hands of Hon. Mr. Justice Y.V. Chandrachud the then Chief Justice of India. The foundation stone of the New Law College building was laid down in the year 2004 at the hands of the Chief Justice of India Hon. Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, the then judge Supreme Court of India. The new building of the law college was inaugurated in the year 2005 at the hands of Hon. Mr. Justice R.C. Lahoti, the then Chief Justice of India. The college has celebrated its silver jubilee in the year 2003 .
The institution offers quality legal education at undergraduate, postgraduate levels in the form of LL.B 3 Year , BBA LLB 5 year, BA LL.B. 5 Year & LL.M.(Trimester & 2 year Course) . These courses are recognized and approved by the BCI & UGC. Besides this the college also offers diploma and certificate courses in the areas of specialization in Labour Laws, Taxation Laws, Arbitration Laws, Human Rights, Intellectual Property Rights, Cyber Laws and Corporate Laws. Innovative programmes in interdisciplinary courses and para legal courses have also been introduced recently in the form of B.B.A. (LAW), expertise in Commercial drafting, Insurance law, Mergers and Acquisitions, Art of Advocacy etc. The faculty of law also provides opportunity for pursuing Doctorate in Law. The college has spacious seven storied independent building with huge Auditorium, separate Moot Court Room, Human Rights Cell, Cyber Cell, Women Empowerment Cell, Legal Aid, Cell, Placement Cell and Foreign Student Cell, etc. Its Library is rich with classic, as well as, recent works on law and legal systems. It has a collection of online data base i.e. SCC online, Manupatra, West Law, Lexis-Nexis besides this back volumes of reputed law journals, law reports, and of reference books, including (i) All England Law Reports (ii) United States Supreme Courts Reports (136 volumes) and (iii) Cropus Juris Secondum (150 volumes). It provides free internet facility to the students through cyber cell. The application of information technology and e-learning is the specialty of the college.
The faculty members are highly qualified & competent. Teaching is done by renowned academicians, senior lawyers ,retired judges, corporate professionals,solicitors. The faculty of the college participates regularly in national & international conferences. The college publishes a Law Journal “Bharati Law Review” quarterly. college has been consistently ranked amongst the top ten law colleges in India on the criteria of curriculum, teaching staff, course, research, library and placement.The college imparts practical training (court room teaching) through Moot Courts ,Legal aid Programmes, educational visits, pro-bono internships. The programmes are designed to expose the students to the different aspects of legal work and procedures in the chambers of Lawyers, Courts, Lok Adalats, Administrative Offices, Legal Aid Centres, Legal Literacy Camps and the like. The law college is ranked 8th among top law schools in India in international mooting league through a survey carried by Legally India.Com, for the year 2009-10. The students of the college were rewarded at international moot court competitions at Oxford, Chicago & Florida. The law college team was invited at Harvard University for attending United Nation’s Model Conference.College organizes Judicial Colloquia, in which eminent jurists, judges and lawyers of Supreme Court and High Courts delivers legal discourse and interacts with the students of law. More than 175 judges from Supreme Court and High Courts have visited New Law College at Judicial Colloquia from 2000 onwards.
A very short span of time, Justice P.N. Bhagwati International Moot Court Competition has earned a great reputation at national and international echelon and is one of the most revered international moot court competitions on human rights across the globe. Justice P.N. Bhagwati 1st Moot Court Competition 2011 was inaugurated by Hon. Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, the then Union Minister for Law & Justice, in the august presence of Hon. Mr. Justice P.N. Bhagwati, Former Chief Justice of India. .Justice P.N. Bhagwati 2nd International Moot Court Competition on Human Rights 2012 was inaugurated by Hon’ble Dr. Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, the then Judge, Supreme Court of India.
While the 3rd edition of this Competition witnessed the blissful visits of by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dipak Misra, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Jasti Chelameswar, Judge, Supreme Court of India, 4th Justice P.N. Bhagwati International Moot Court Competition was graced by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Shiva Kirti Singh, Judge, Supreme Court of India and the prizes were distributed by Hon’ble Mr. Justice N.V. Ramana, Judge, Supreme Court of India. Similarly, the 5th Justice P.N. Bhagwati International Moot Court Competition was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dipak Misra, Judge, Supreme Court of India. While 6th Justice P.N. Bhagwati International Moot Court Competition was graced by Hon’ble Mr. justice V. Gopala Gowda, Judge, Supreme Court of India and other dignitaries.
This year also saw the flamboyant organization of the Surana & Surana National trial Advocacy Moot court Competition on Criminal Law which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Tarun Chatterjee, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India and in which top 20 teams from the Western India participated.
More than 14 international teams from Europe, US, Asia and Africa as well as nearly 40 teams from top law schools in India participate in this prestigious competition every year.
The college is associated and collaborated with renowned universities in UK., USA through participation in the international moot court competitions, recommending students for LL.M. Courses abroad and sending faculty to deliver legal discourse. The college is associated with Oxford University, University of Sussex, The Law Society of England & Wales, King’s College, London, John Marshall Law School, Chicago, USA Depaul University, USA, University of Reading,UK, University of Westminster,UK, Birmingham University,UK. We also propose to have collaborations with Kingston University,UK.
The college is also a recognized centre of Bharati Vidyapeeth University for offering distance education learning mode programme in law at PG & Diploma levels. The main aim of offering Master of Laws i.e. LL.M. is to cater the needs of thousands of Advocates who desires to expertise in a special branch of law while continuing practice. The P.G. level programme helps lawyers, teachers, member of judiciary, employees & solicitors to have in depth study of their area of specialization. NLC is equipped with one of the best libraries with a collection of both Indian and foreign books. The library is well stocked and computerized, with an extensive collection of Textbooks, Reference Material, Law Reports and Journals/Periodicals. To name few, All England Law Reports, United States Supreme Court Report (136 Volume), Corpus Juris Secundum, Halsbury Law Journals (150 Volume).
The process of learning is all about researching new facts, methods and approaches to understanding the working of the world which is in a constant state of flux. The state of the art computer centre is backed up by an IBM net finity server with a leased line internet connection and UPS power back up. The computer centre is well equipped with more than 100 computers allowing mobile accessibility.
During the last four years, the college has added the Text Books Reference Material, Law Reports & Journals, which costed more than Rs. 1.7 Crore. The New Law College library perhaps is the only library in Pune having the collection of the All England Law Reports, United States Supreme Court Report (136 Volumes) and Corpus Juris Secundum Halsbury Law England (150 Volumes), which is an invaluable tool for the law research along with the latest addition of Manupatra, LexisNexis and Westlaw.
